“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:17) “And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world and people loved darkness rather than light…” (John 3:20)
The Season of Lent provides us with the opportunity to think about topics like Sin and Judgment. I’m stuck on a strain of thought that is imbedded not only in the third chapter of John but also in chapter twelve, the source of last week’s sermon. We sin, or miss the mark, when we choose to settle for something less than what God has in store for us as God’s children. Consider the Mediocre Inn that Rod mentioned in his last sermon. Those who chose to end their journey at this comfortable resting place nestled at the half-way point on Mount Blanc never allowed themselves to experience the joy that waited for them at the summit. They were free to choose and they chose to settle. In doing so, they weren’t judged by God so much as they placed judgment on themselves. The final days of Lent provide us with the chance to reflect on what we’ve chosen to settle for in life, why we chose to settle and what we intend to do about it. I pray that we will choose wisely.
